Assessing Airway Microbiota in Cystic Fibrosis: What More Should Be Done?

چکیده

The use of culture-independent methods has deepened our appreciation of the complexity of the bacterial communities that typically reside in the airways of persons with cystic fibrosis (CF). New insights into how changes in the structure of these communities relate to lung disease progression will likely raise expectations for more in-depth microbiologic analysis of CF respiratory specimens. An article in this issue of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology (W. G. Flight, A. Smith, C. Paisey, J. R. Marchesi, M. J. Bull, P. J. Norville, K. J. Mutton, A. K. Webb, R. J. Bright-Thomas, A. M. Jones, and E. Mahenthiralingam, J Clin Microbiol 53:2022-2029, 2015, http://dx.doi.org/10.1128/JCM.00432-15) describes the application of a culture-independent approach to the assessment of CF airway microbiota.

Coincidence of Cystic Fibrosis in Mother and her Child Related to Infertility

Cystic fibrosis (CF), the most common life-shortening, hereditary disease in whites, manifests itself principally in childhood. Patients presenting with CF as adults appear to be different when compared to patients diagnosed with CF during childhood. Often these patients have been previously diagnosed with asthma, chronic bronchitis or emphysema. We present a case of a woman diagnosed with CF a...

Maintaining Respiratory Health in Cystic Fibrosis Patients

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disease that primarily affects the lungs and the digestive system, however, it also affects a number of other organs and systems. More than 90% of mortality of  CF patients is due to lung complications.  Healthy lungs are important for a long life for people with CF, We will discuss two important topics for maintaining respiratory health. Chronic use of drug...

Positive Expiratory Pressure (PEP) versus Conventional Chest Physiotherapy in Pediatric Patients with Acute Exacerbation of Cystic Fibrosis

Background Pulmonary involvement is the main cause of mortality in cystic fibrosis (CF). Airway clearance techniques are non-pharmacological complement options for CF patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term outcome of airway cleaning treatment in patients with cystic fibrosis in a children's hospital. Materials and Methods This clinical trial study conducted on 40 CF pati...

Acquisition and adaptation of the airway microbiota in the early life of cystic fibrosis patients

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease in which bacterial infections of the airways play a major role in the long-term clinical outcome. In recent years, a number of next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based studies aimed at deciphering the structure and composition of the airways' microbiota. It was shown that the nasal cavity of CF patients displays dysbiosis early in life indicating a failur...

Airway Microbiota and Pathogen Abundance in Age-Stratified Cystic Fibrosis Patients

Bacterial communities in the airways of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients are, as in other ecological niches, influenced by autogenic and allogenic factors. However, our understanding of microbial colonization in younger versus older CF airways and the association with pulmonary function is rudimentary at best. Using a phylogenetic microarray, we examine the airway microbiota in age stratified CF p...
